randyc | I have a model made by the Marshall Space Flight Center model shop that needs some restoration. I need to have the launch escape tower made and the United States decals on the Atlas replaced. I looked for photos of the model on the internet and only found two photos on a website with the Smithsonian Institution label. I'm not sure if that one is 100% original because it is not on a base with the MSFC model shop nameplate. Since the lettering of the United States decals on the model I have are thicker than the ones I found pictures of I would like to confirm which decals are original. I would also like to have closeups of the launch escape tower from different angles to help having a replacement made. If you have this model and can send me photos that would be great. Or if you locate other photos on the internet please let me know where to find them. Thank you. |
Headshot | There are some photos and diagrams of the launch escape tower in the NASA Mercury Owner's Workshop Manual by Haynes. Also, Apogee's Freedom 7 book includes a great color picture. Kenneth Gatland's Manned Spacecraft Encyclopedia has a very clear airbrush diagram of the Mercury capsule with escape tower and also includes a dimension scale. |
Retro Rocket | i could ask my contact at the MSFC model shop if they have one or the blueprints. I've gotten pdf copies of the original blueprints for the 1/96th scale Saturn V and Saturn 1B through FOIA. it takes a little time but it's worth it. |
randyc | If you can get information from the MSFC model shop that will help in making a replacement launch escape tower that would be great. Please let me know. Thanks. |
NASA Glenn | Here are some photos that will help. As for the lettering on your model, it is not like a water transfer decal, it is instead lettering on a thin clear plastic actually glued onto the model.

randyc | Thanks for the photos NASA Glenn! |
GACspaceguy | I wonder if you could contact the auction house and see if there is any info on the bottom of the base. The typical place the manufactures outside of MSFC place their info. |
